A PART, A PART

About the Exhibition

A Part, Apart is very much about a particular partnership between two prolific artists, Brittany Mojo and Chris Miller; it is, by extension, about connections between people, the ways in which we negotiate distance, and how material can be used to locate ourselves and each other. This body of work is a deliberate and intimate conversation between two artists who find themselves living apart from each other for the first time in seven years. In keeping with this circumstance, Mojo and Miller have deviated from their familiar process-driven and intuitive individual practices by creating a system of guidelines for coordinated content and collaborative making. Working in parallel, Mojo and Miller make their own iterations of the same parts. Mojo makes gestural, squeezed beads and Miller makes worn, tumbled beads; Mojo hand paints patterned tiles and Miller generates marks with hand and automated systems; Mojo coils and pinches a three-foot tall basin and Miller throws and constructs a three-foot wide basin. They make dual versions of a series of personally significant objects and use these objects to fill each other’s basins. A-B Projects is teeming with Mojo and Miller’s first formal collaboration. It is a tangible representation of the distance between divided homes, and a manifestation of a shared home; an amplification of solitude, and a language for togetherness.

About the Artists

Brittany Mojo was born and raised in NJ. She moved to California to pursue her BFA in ceramics from California State University, Long Beach. She received her MFA from UCLA in 2016. For the past three years Mojo has been living and working in Southern California as a professor and professional artist. Mojo has shown vigorously since 2016, with exhibitions mounted throughout the United States and Europe. Recently, Mojo moved to San Luis Obispo to teach ceramics as full time faculty in the Fine Arts department at Cuesta College. As an artist and educator, she is persistent in her engagement with various arts communities in Central and Southern California. She is a member of the artist-run gallery and non-profit arts organization, Tiger Strikes Asteroid, Los Angeles.

Chris Miller graduated with an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2005. From 2006-2009 Miller was awarded the Turner Teaching Fellowship at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Since 2010, Miller has taught at the California State University, Long Beach where he continues to teach ceramics and manages the Three-Dimensional Foundation program. Miller is also a member of the highly respected Los Angeles artist-run gallery, Monte Vista Projects. He currently lives and works in Long Beach.
