Where’d you get that banana?

About the Exhibition

“In my current body of work I’m making text-based sculpture, with ceramics as my primary medium. Giving language material and form allows me to explore the ephemeral nature of language itself. Not only am I interested in the fleeting nature of language, but also the internal space of language. I think of language as a skin surrounding abstractions, ideas and concepts. Materiality allows me to explore, not only the liminal spaces between letters, words and phrases, but also the internal spaces of letter forms as I explore the internal architecture and meaning of language and communication. Language is ultimately magical and powerful, yet malleable and fallible. I love those contradictions and the poetry that is created.”

About the Artist

Thomas Müller is an artist and educator currently living and working in Los Angeles, California. A Swiss/US citizen, he was born in Cape Town, South Africa and spent his childhood growing up around the globe. Growing up in disparate locales and cultures has inevitably influenced his work, in particular as it relates to language, memory and time.

Since moving to Los Angeles, shortly after receiving his MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art, he has maintained an active studio practice and showing record, showing locally, nationally and internationally, with recent solo shows in Los Angeles, Denver and Washington DC. He has worked with all kinds of materials and concepts, however the consistent thread has been an interest in the ephemeral.

He is currently teaching at USC.
