Spiral Practice

with Kim Norton

  • The Spiral Practice Studio Session is a gathering of artists seeking to embrace the cyclical nature of creative growth. Participants will explore how—intentionally or not—revisiting and refining previous ideas, processes, media, conversations, and modes of making often leads to evolution in an artistic practice. Within this process we question whether moving backwards can actually be a way of moving forward.

  • Ceramicist/Artist/Maker Kim Norton studied BA Three Dimensional Design: Ceramics at Surrey Institute of Art and Design (Farnham) and MA Design: Ceramics at Central Saint Martins.A large part of her interdisciplinary project led practice involves working site-specifically, exploring scale and making work that focuses on how we interact with spaces and the impact these works have on the human senses.Materiality, physicality and presence of material are always evident. Conscious of consumption of materials and resources, Kim approaches each project by questioning how materials are used, where they are sourced and the permanence or impermanence of these objects or installations. Kim is one of the founding members of haptic/tacit established in 2013 along with fellow ceramicists Jane Cairns and Grant Aston. Together they explore ambitious modern craft through a series of thematically-driven exhibitions, events, and publications.

  • This Studio Session took place in April 2023.
