ON THE SURFACE OF ABYSS

Soo Shin

April 19 – May 6, 2016

About the Exhibition

The process of searching for something beyond the self is not black and white. It doesn’t have a beginning or an end, an entrance or an exit, or any real attainable destination. Nevertheless, many people tend to have faith in the idea that searching will lead to finding—answers, truth, love, or even savior—despite the persistence of an unknown future. I believe that divine experience is composed of the moments when we continuously seek the horizon, regardless of our inability to ever approach or see farther than it. My work resides in this non-binary, grey space where faith and struggle coexist, and where the act of searching leaves us vulnerable and uncertain. Each of us carries our own abyss inside. The glimpse of our aspirations exists on the surface of this abyss, facing the immense and remote world.
